Terrain aspect statistics — 10 Hokkaido resorts (DEM grid, 5–45° slopes)
This page counts digital elevation model (DEM) grid cells with slopes between 5° and 45°, within each resort’s baked 3D extent, grouped into eight compass aspects. It is not skiable area, not area inside a resort boundary, and no piste mask is applied.
This page presents static terrain statistics and model parameters. Snow-quality scores are SnowWind model estimates — not measurements, not an official forecast, and not an avalanche or safety assessment. MODEL PARAMETER v3

How the model works
- SOURCE FACTSnow-liquid ratio (SLR) = snow depth ÷ melted water depth. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s “dry snow” threshold is 2.0 cm/mm.
- SOURCE FACTFurano City’s published “fuwa-sara” index anchors 50 points at SLR 2.0 cm/mm (source: Cold Region Technology Conference Vol.39 (2023); bonchipowder.com).
- SNOWWIND INFERENCEWe map dryness as 25 × SLR. That linear mapping is SnowWind’s own inference — the published work does not give a mapping formula.
- SNOWWIND INFERENCESLR is estimated from temperature with a Kuchera-lite heuristic (not the original NWS formula).

Questions
Is “share of cells” the same as skiable area?
No. It is the distribution of 5–45° DEM grid cells inside the baked extent by aspect. No resort boundary and no piste mask are applied. For run-level data see each resort’s runs & lifts page.
Why only 5–45°?
Below 5° is effectively flat; above 45° in Hokkaido resort terrain is usually cliff or non-skiing ground. The band is a common convention for terrain statistics.
Why does aspect matter?
After the same snowfall, sun and wind exposure differ by aspect, so the snow surface preserves very differently. Deciding which aspect is best on a given day needs that day’s wind and sun — static statistics cannot answer it.
How often do these numbers change?
Terrain data changes only when the 3D maps are re-baked. Every build records its timestamp and a SHA-256 of every input file; the data version in the footer is exactly that.
